Homeland security deals with national concerns regarding the different dangers and threats that our nation faces and ensuring the safety of each and every American citizen.  Through the years, different administrations have passed or amended existing legislation relating to homeland security to strengthen our national defense.

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 stipulates procedures for different modes of surveillance being done to gather foreign intelligence information. The investigation can be done electronically or through the use of pen registers, trap and trace devices, business records, or actual physical searches.  This is where nanotechnology becomes vital as it allows the military to conduct surveillance through the use of non-obstructive devices. The said legislation also led to the creation of the US Foreign Intelligence Service Court, which is a special court that issues search warrants for foreign intelligence surveillance operations.

However, law enforcers need to establish that there is probable cause that the person or persons of interest are considered a foreign power or agent of a foreign power.  Surveillance can be done on an individual or group of foreigners believed to be involved in international terrorist activities. Some proponents of human rights question the legality of using nanotechnology in such operations. They demand that there be a separate regulatory commission that would oversee the safe and ethical use of nanotechnology in different fields, especially in military science. Implementation of this law will help us enhance our domestic security as well as give importance to human rights.  The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 intends to use all means to gather foreign intelligence reports that can provide leads on terrorist activities. In keeping our country safe, the government and law enforcers have to be two or three steps ahead of the terrorist groups.  They need all the tools and information that they can get to be able to strategize in neutralizing terrorism. However, some groups demand that the government do so in the most humane way possible to remove any ethical issues involved.

Addressing the needs of the older people

This article is about addressing the needs of the older people, who are still in the workforce when it comes to safety and wellness.  It is important to come up with better ergonomics and wellness programs so that we can take good care of our aging workforce. We should be proactive in addressing their needs rather than shoulder the cost of medical expenses and the inconveniences caused by their absences from work. The author suggested strategies on how we can prevent musculoskeletal disorders or MSDs.

These are the common health issues encountered by older people in the workforce. Safety and wellness programs should include nanotechnology and engineering, administrative, and behavioral interventions to ensure prevention of injuries at work.   This article addresses the needs of the older people in the workforce.  We should value their contribution and effort to still be productive citizens of our country.  To help them perform their responsibilities to the fullest, we should ensure that their work environment is safe and supportive of their needs.  This study is also in support of the United States Labor Law on Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967.

Ergonomic and behavior-based strategies are used to ensure the safety and wellness of our aging workforce.  Different techniques can relieve stress from different parts of our body.  The discussion on different interventions involving engineering, administrative, and behavioral factors shows that it takes a holistic approach to be able to manage the aging workforce. Engineering designs and solutions, especially in the field of nanotechnology, make it easier and safer for them to perform their jobs.  The companies can also implement policies that promote a healthy work environment. There should also be behavioral and lifestyle changes that would reduce the risk of injury and sickness. The workplace should be a safe location for all workers especially for our aging workforce who only want to contribute to the success of the company.

Research is a systematic study or investigation of sources and materials to be able to reach a conclusion. We say it is systematic because there is an order in the way things are done. First, when you do research, you collect related data. Then, you present these data that you gathered and analyze if there are connections and relationships among them. From that analysis, you derive your conclusions and recommendations. This is the most important part of research because something useful comes out of the study that could benefit the society.

There are different kinds of research. There is the exploratory research, descriptive, quantitative research, qualitative, and applied research. Each kind of research is designed for a specific purpose. A research also uses different methodologies and tools to be able to come up with relevant data for the study. Scientific research is often concerned with manipulating variables to see the different effects in a particular setting. This is more of an exact science as the conditions are really regulated to eradicate any unrelated factor that may affect the outcome of the study. Research in the social sciences is less restrictive when it comes to controlling variables. They are more qualitative and descriptive in nature. This is based on the assumption that human behavior cannot be quantified. That is why social researchers explain and illustrate different human behaviors to be able to show the effects or result of a particular condition.

Scientific and social research both aim to show us the relationship between different factors and how this relationship can affect results or human behavior. They prove or disprove existing theories. Research is also done in conducting new product development to answer the needs of the people. Lastly, research helps us in policy analysis and decision making so that we can make an informed choice that would benefit other people.
